There are so many health problems that can be avoided simply by getting adequate amounts of sleep. Researchers and scientists haven’t been able to pinpoint exactly how many hours of sleep every individual needs, but eight hours every night seems to suit most adults just fine. Some adults might need more or less sleep. Whether you need less or more, the quality of your sleep plays an important role in how much you benefit from a night’s rest.

Remain Sharp and Focused
Whether you have a job that requires you to stay mentally focused or one that requires constant physical exertion, a good night’s sleep is crucial. You need to remember that the brain does most of it’s ‘administrative’ work during the hours of sleep. It files memories, stores information, deletes information that is no longer needed and stores information you will only need much later in your subconscious. The muscles of the body are the most relaxed during the best hours of sleep. This allows them to rest and repair themselves from the stressful pulls, jerks and general overexertion that is required for jobs that require physical exertion. A good night’s sleep will always help ensure your next day’s productivity, no matter what kind of work you do.

Keep the Flu and Other Illnesses at Bay
There is plenty of scientific and medical evidence that proves that lack of adequate sleep can actually make you sick. Lack of sleep weakens the body’s immune system and can make you more susceptible to simple viruses like the common cold virus. When you go for extended periods of time with inadequate amounts of sleep, the antibodies and other disease-fighting organisms in your body actually begin to decline.

This means that sleep deprivation or low quality of sleep can actually aggravate certain health conditions, keep wounds and infections from healing and bodily injuries from repairing themselves. One of the most important things you can do to improve your quality of sleep is to make sure your bedroom is as sleep-friendly as can be during bedtime.

The Right Sleeping Environment
You have to set the right conditions for getting a good night’s sleep every night. Try never to go immediately from using your computer or phone to jumping into bed. The last thing you want to do is lie in bed working on your smartphone, thinking you can drift off to sleep when you’re ready to. Cell phones, iPads and laptops use the blue light spectrum on their displays. They can cause eye strain and mental fatigue very quickly without you noticing it. Your mental faculties actually have to try to adjust to this light while you are using these devices. After you’re done using them, your eyes and mind have to readjust once again. This takes time, and it can keep you awake as a result.

Having the right mattress can also make a world of difference on how well you sleep at night. Cheap mattresses produce pressure points that cause you aggravation during sleep, causing disturbances in your sleep patterns. You tend to wake up often during the night if the mattress you’re sleeping on is not as comfortable as it could be. Doing everything in your power to ensure a good night’s sleep will keep you healthy for years to come.
