Everyone is going to look in the mirror at one point or another and notice a few extra lines and wrinkles. Whether it’s a furrowed brow, a downward facing mouth or fine lines around your eyes, lines and wrinkles are par for the course as we age.

There is no need to jump straight to surgery when you want to turn back the clock though. There are a number of great non-surgical treatments that are both safe and highly effective. The type of treatment that you decide on will depend on your specific skin concerns.

What Causes Wrinkles as We Age?

There are two types of wrinkles, namely dynamic and static wrinkles.

Dynamic wrinkles are the result of our daily facial expressions. We use several different muscles to laugh, frown or cry, all of which can leave us with deep grooves and lines that make us appear older than we are.

Static wrinkles are the result of a loss of fat, collagen and general skin elasticity. These are the wrinkles that remain visible and aren’t associated with facial expressions. Crow’s feet are a prime example of static wrinkles.

As we get older, our skin isn’t able to bounce back to its original position as easily, which is when lines and wrinkles become more obvious.

Treating Lines & Wrinkles without Surgery

Dermal fillers and anti-wrinkles injections are the best treatments for both dynamic and static wrinkles, with both treatments serving a slightly different purpose.

Dermal fillers, which contain a substance called hyaluronic acid, are used to naturally add volume to the skin, which plumps out those pesky static lines around the eyes and mouth. Dermal fillers can also be used to add more volume to your lips and cheeks.

Anti-wrinkle injections work in a slightly different way by targeting the muscles that are responsible for dynamic wrinkles. Anti-wrinkle injections relax the muscles that are responsible for forming expression lines while also smoothing out existing static wrinkles.

In some cases, patients will combine fillers with anti-wrinkle injections for the best results.

What about Skin Pigmentation?

Skin pigmentation is the result of genetics, excessive exposure to the sun, hormonal imbalances and skin trauma. Unfortunately, it can also make you appear older than you really are. Fortunately, there are a number of effective non-surgical solutions for pigmentation too.

While chemical peels are a popular option for pigmentation, there are also a number of laser treatments that can reduce the appearance of skin pigmentation as well as freckles. The type of laser that is used will depend on your skin tone but most modern laser systems can be used on all skin tones.

As you can tell, there really is no need to consider surgery when there are so many great non-surgical options available. Just be sure to do your research to find a reputable doctor that is both qualified and has experience with the treatments you’re interested in.
